Surfing recently made its debut as an official Olympic sport at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Besides good balance and strong core muscles, this sport also requires surfers to predict and analyse which approaching waves are suitable for what kinds of rides and tricks.
As large waves aren’t common along Singapore’s shores, other surfing-related activities like wakeboarding, paddleboarding and yoga on surfboards are more popular. There’s also SURFSET Fitness, which teaches challenging workouts on a surfboard, but on dry land.
Did you know that there is a way of experiencing surfing without travelling out of Singapore? The Stingray® is the world’s first half-pipe surfing machine, which is the only artificial wave pool in Singapore and located within
Splash-N-Surf at the Singapore Sports Hub. Even children can learn to surf on the Stingray®, so long as they are at least 1.2 metres tall.

After a safety briefing, the coach conducts a dry run to let the attendees practice moves on land, then brings them to the wave pool to execute the different surfing techniques they’ve learned. Newbies usually start with bodyboarding, where they lie chest-down on the board, then progress to upright surfing positions like kneeboarding and, finally, the upright surfing position. Sessions can accommodate up to four surfers per time slot, which lasts about an hour each.
Does the Stingray® sound like a challenge you’ll enjoy? Check out this new video that lends a sneak peek at the Stingray® experience. The Stingray® at Splash-N-Surf lets you enjoy surfing, with experienced coaching staff and without the dangers of the open sea.
